How do I become a Midshipman?
In order to be a Midshipman at The Ohio State University, the first
thing you must do is gain admission to the university and be scheduled
to be a full-time student. Once enrolled in university classes,
then you would sign up for Naval Science classes. YOU DO
NOT HAVE TO BE ON SCHOLARSHIP TO BE A MIDSHIPMAN! The Naval
ROTC program is an elective.
The NROTC program is made up of two types of Midshipmen; scholarship and
college program.
There is a large misconception that the only way to be accepted into NROTC is
to win a 4 year scholarship out of high school. In fact, we also offer 3 and 2
year scholarships. The 4 year scholarship is awarded based on a candidates'
potential to perform. However actual performance is always more important than
potential performance.
Many scholarships are granted to Midshipmen who enter in the college program
after their first year or two of college. It is therefore critical
that college program Midshipmen perform well during those first
two years. The general requirement is that you maintain at least
a 3.0 gpa and pass the University's calculus series (Math 151, 152,
and 153) and the calculus-based physics series (Physics 131, 132,
and 133).
The Scholarship will cover full tuition, an allowance for books, and any fees such as computer
or equipment fees. In addition, the scholarship entitles you to a monthly
stipend (not less than $250) which you may spend on whatever you want.
If you do not receive the NROTC scholarship, don't worry. You may continue
throughout the program, graduate and receive your commission while remaining in
the college program.
If you are near your senior year of high
school, you will need to contact your local Navy recruiter for more
information on how to submit an application package for the 4 year
scholarship. If you are going to be a University freshman or sophomore
you should call the NROTC unit at 614-292-6015 or stop by and talk
to our recruiting officer LT Libasci.
Our address is 2121 Tuttle Park Pl. Columbus, Ohio 43210. We are
located on The Ohio State University Columbus' campus across from
the North end of Ohio Stadium and adjacent to the Ice Rink.
If you have less than 2 years of college remaining, then you would want to
contact your local officer recruiter for details about Officer's Candidate
School (OCS).
