Why OSU NROTC?
If you have come this far, then you are probably considering becoming
a Midshipman (an outstanding decision). But, there are dozens of
Universities out there that offer NROTC programs. So the question
you may have is: Why should I choose OSU NROTC?
Answer: Well there are many reasons OSU Midshipmen give for their
decision to attend OSU. Among them are:
Many Midshipmen are from Ohio, and Columbus is centrally located
just about two hours away from anywhere in the state. It is far
enough away to get that true "college experience" yet
close enough to jet on home for the weekend.
There is the always Big 10 powerhouse Buckeye Football!!! Nothing
in the world is like OSU Football in "The Shoe." You can
literally smell the football fever in the air as the entire campus
gleams with scarlet and gray. Nearly one hundred thousand screaming
fans pack into Ohio Stadium to watch the Buckeyes crush another
opponent. The ROTC programs collectively have the honor of raising
the flag at the football games up the 150 foot flag pole and Midshipmen
on the flag raising detail get into the games for free and have
some of the best seats in the house right on the field. It is quite
an honor!
Many choose OSU because of its outstanding academic reputation.
Two nationally renowned colleges on campus are the College of Engineering
and the newly built Fisher College of Business. On a campus as large
as OSU, you can find any major you desire. One of the things I was
once told about OSU which I found to be very true was that: you
can always make a large school small, but you can't make a small
school large.
The OSU NROTC program also has many resources available to its Midshipmen
such as a state of the art computer lab, study room facilities,
a math and physics tutor, a mentoring program, and the Mershon Grant
Program which actually pays Midshipmen for getting good grades!
The Warfare Council organizes annual trips to Naval and government
installations such as The Pentagon, Norfolk Naval Base, Naval Air
Station Cecil Field, and this year we flew out to San Diego Naval
Base during Winter break!
The OSU NROTC Battalion is also an ideal location to built leadership
ability. While the Battalion is Officer advised, the day-to-day
operations are run by the Midshipmen Staff. Billets range from squad
leader to Battalion Commander. It is a great way to fine tune your
leadership skills!
